Hatching Eggs: $5 each + $15 shipping

Day Old Straight Run: $5 each local pickup only

Size and Weight

Ameraucana's are petite chickens and are definitely not a bird you would consider for meat production. Hens weigh approximately 4 pounds, and roosters weigh about 5 pounds.

Temperament

Ameraucana's have an incredibly docile and friendly dispositions that they are well known for. Chicken keepers who are after pets, as well as excellent and fun blue egg layers.

Egg Production

In addition to laying fun and pretty blue eggs, Ameraucana's have an excellent production. One hen can produce about 250 eggs per year. That’s about five colorful eggs per week! Hens may slow down with laying in the winter due to shortened daylight hours, but they can still produce several eggs during the winter.

Silkies 💙 Standard, Showgirl & Stripper 💙 Possible Satin & Frizzle

Hatching Eggs: $5 each + $15 shipping

Day Old Straight Run: $10 each local pickup only

Size and Weight

While Silkie chickens are technically categorized as bantams. These are rather petite birds, with hens weighing about 3 pounds and roosters approximately 4 pounds.

Temperament

Silkies are probably best known for their affectionate and gentle dispositions. Always ready to cuddle up with their owners and happy to sit in your lap, you won’t find a much sweeter breed of chicken. Silkie hens are also famous for their constant desire to go broody and raise a batch of chicks. Many chicken breeders keep a small flock of Silkies purely to use them for their mothering tendencies.

Egg Production

If you are after a breed for egg production, Silkies probably aren’t your bird. Silkies average about 100 small and light colored eggs per year. The primary purposes of Silkies are as pets, brood mothers, and exhibition.

Traditional & Malaysian Serama ❤ Worlds Smallest Chicken ❤ Possible Frizzle

Hatching Eggs: $5 each + $15 shipping

Day Old Straight Run: $15 each local pickup only

Size and Weight

Seramas proudly hold the title of smallest breed of chicken in the world. Since the number one defining trait of Seramas is their size, they are placed in different classes based on their size.

Roosters:

Micro – up to 13 ounces Class A – under 13 ounces Class B – under 16 ounces Class C -under 19 ounces

Hens:

Micro – up to 8 ounces Class A – under 12 ounces Class B – under 15 ounces Class C – under 19 ounces

It’s hard to imagine the extent of how tiny the chicks of this breed are until you hold one. When I hatched my first Serama chick I was amazed by how tiny and fragile the little chick was. The clutch of 6 chicks that I hatched fit in the palm of my hand.

Temperament

For such a little bird, Seramas sure do have a giant personality. Generally, roosters are very polite and respectful of hens and people alike. Many people keep Seramas as housepets because of their affectionate behavior.

Egg Production

It is rather uncommon to find a bantam with decent egg production, but Seramas are an exception to this. Seramas can lay up to five eggs a week per hen. It takes about 5 Serama eggs to reach the equivalent of one grade A standard egg.

Climate

Since Seramas are so tiny, they have a hard time staying warm during harsh weather. A well-insulated chicken coop is best and during coldest months a fire safe heating pad can be very useful. Seramas do pretty well in heat, but they can overheat in extreme heat so always make sure they have clean, cool water and plenty of shade.

Ayam Cemani's 🖤 Welcome to the dark side 🖤

Hatching Eggs: $8 each + $15 shipping

Day Old Straight Run: $35 each local pickup only

At the current time they remain a pretty rare bird and can be hard to obtain.

Size and Weight

Ayam Cemanis are a striking sight. Their all black feathers have a beetle-green iridescence in sunlight that is stunning. They are not an overly large fowl; the boys weigh in around 4.5-6.5lb, with the girls coming in at 3.5-4.5lb respectively, so more of a medium sized bird.

Temperament and Disposition

Ayam Cemani's in general seem to be a friendly and likeable bird. They are intelligent, gentle and docile – including the roosters. They are an easy to handle and low maintenance fowl.

Production

The Ayam Cemani is a fairly poor egg layer. On average they will lay around 80 eggs per year which is around 1 egg per week. They do seem to go ‘off lay’ for an extended period of time. Apparently they will lay 20-30 eggs and then stop laying. This can be up to 6 months, and then they will start all over again! In comparison to the size of the hen the eggs are quite large and they are cream colored with a very slight pink tint (not black). I have seen several photos that show black eggs – rest assured these are fake eggs.

Brahma 💜 2nd Largest Chicken in the world 💜

Hatching Eggs: $5 each + $15 shipping

Day Old Straight Run: $15 each local pickup only

Size and Weight

Arguably some of the largest chickens in the world, hens weigh about 9 pounds with roosters weighing in around 12-13 pounds. Definitely not a petite chicken! On top of their large size, Brahmas have fluffy feathers, making them appear to be rather humongous.

Temperament

Don’t let their large size intimidate you; these birds are gentle giants. Brahmas are very calm and docile with a natural affection for their caretakers. They also make incredible mothers, and Brahma hens have been known to go broody frequently.

Egg Production

Though Brahma chickens were primarily bred for meat, they do have fair egg production. You can expect approximately 150 large, light brown eggs from a single hen in a year. One of the best parts about their egg production, is they are more likely to lay eggs during the winter.

Meat Production

If you’re looking for a large dual purpose bird, you don’t need to look any further. These large birds can dress out the same size as an averagely sized broiler. As with most heritage breeds, Brahmas are slow growers, and they will not be full grown in 3 months like some meat birds. If you’re willing to wait, these birds will reward you with good quality meat.

🦆 Welsh Harlequin Ducks 🦆

Hatching Eggs: $4 each + $15 shipping

Day Old Straight Run: $10 each local pickup only

Welsh Harlequin Ducks are a breed with a unique history, diverse uses, and a teetering endangerment status.

Size and Weight

Welsh Harlequins aren’t incredibly large ducks. However, they’re not the smallest and most petite breed out there either. You can generally expect a Welsh Harlequin to weigh around 4.5-5.5 pounds at full-grown weight.

Temperament

The Welsh Harlequin duck is generally a very docile and relaxed breed with an easygoing disposition. You can expect excellent foraging qualities out of this duck and plan on giving them plenty of room to roam for their meals. In addition to their docile personalities and excellent foraging qualities, Welsh Harlequin hens make excellent mothers.

Egg Production

Just like the Khaki Campbells they descended from, Welsh Harlequins have outstanding egg production. A single Welsh Harlequin hen can lay 240-330 eggs in a year. For those looking for a reliable egg layer, you may not need to look past this overachieving breed.

Meat Production

Welsh Harlequins are listed as a dual-purpose breed, but they aren’t going to be the meatiest breed you raise. Nonetheless, Welsh Harlequins are hailed for their production of lean, beautifully colored meat.

🦃 Bourbon Red Turkeys 🦃

Hatching Eggs: $7 each + $15 shipping

Day Old Straight Run: $15 each local pickup only

Size and Weight

Bourbon Reds are relatively larger than many breeds of turkeys, which is what makes them more ideal for meat production. A fully matured tom turkey can be expected to reach up to 32 pounds. Your turkey could be bigger than your dog! Fully grown hens weigh approximately 18 pounds.

Temperament

Nearly all turkey keepers report wonderfully friendly and sweet demeanors in their Bourbon Red turkeys. There can be an occasional aggressive or territorial male, but that’s mainly towards rivaling males. As far as human interaction goes, Bourbon Reds are pretty friendly birds with an outgoing and affectionate personality.

Meat Production

Since meat production was the primary purpose of breeding these turkeys, you shouldn’t be disappointed by their output. Bourbon Reds can sometimes be a bit challenging to pluck according to some turkey keepers, but their meat is worth it. A nicely dressed carcass from a Bourbon Red should be somewhere in between 14 and 23 pounds. Bred primarily for their nice breast meat, this is an excellent choice for a table bird.
